What Would You Be If You Weren't a Published Author

On Twitter, one of the other authors whom I follow, asked everyone: What would you be if you weren't a writer/author?

Well I can't speak for all authors but for me, I would be as I am now with one exception--not an author/writer. I probably would still have a presence on social media/online, I would still create handmade gifts to sell on Etsy or eBay but there would be no books, no Chandra's Quest, no In the Company of Elves, et cetera. I strongly believe that my life would be the same except that I wouldn't have published a book/books, I wouldn't have thought about becoming an author at all; I would not have the inspiration to do so.

Since I love making handmade gifts, that would have been the only creative outlet I would have going for me. I often wonder though, if I didn't become a published author, would the people who blocked me on social media, have still blocked me? Would they have been just as critical of what I sell online?

So many questions, so many 'what if's.' My children took inspiration from my creativity and if I had denied or ignored my passion, what example would I have set for them? If I had not pushed forward, been assertive pursuing my dream, would that show them that keeping their creativity bottled up inside is better than having others critic their work?
My creativity is a way for me to put my imagination out there and it eases my mind, makes me happy. I enjoy writing, letting others read my work. Money isn't the issue for me because when I create something, I want those people who are interested in my work or items I've created, to like/ enjoy the things I've done; to own something I've created with my own two hands.

When I write in this blog or in one of my other blogs and someone actually reads the entry, I am grateful that they took the time to read what I've written. Perhaps, that person agrees with what I've written and enjoys it. I really don't know the type of audience/readers I attract but it is for them that I write, it is for them that I create my stories and publish my books and it is for my children that I pursue my endeavors, so they will be encouraged to pursue their dreams. When I pass away, I would leave something behind, something precious to my children, memories and my books so they can continue selling them and giving readers my gift, my creativity, my books. Just saying.

New Decade, New Projects

New Decade, New Projects? Well, actually I decided to drop one of the  books I'm working on. It's called, Finding Loretta. I feel that I should concentrate more on completing Chandra's Quest book 3: Immorality, the final installment of the trilogy.

I will delve more into book 3, completing the draft & editing it. I might publish it by the end of next year--hopefully. As for my other books, well I finished the draft for Secret Diary of a Gypsy Heart. Not so hard to do since it is a novelette. I plan on making it a prequel to a book I have been mulling over in my head. Secret Diary of a Gypsy Heart is loosely based on a real diary. That's all I will say about it.

Out in the Open, is still on the agenda but no rush on finishing it anytime soon. The book is a prequel to the Phoenix Files. This new decade will be one of wonder, determination, and hope.

Last Words:
Write what you feel and know. Everyone has a unique gift to writing a good book. For every book you write, there is an audience you'll attract. What might not appeal to some, might appeal to others. Find a category you are comfortable with and just do it.
Write the draft then go over it a few times, then edit it. Most of all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Using a Pseudonym

I read a comment that Indie/self-published authors should not use pen names (pseudonym) because they're not real authors. Of course social media is the place to post comments like that right? Despite of the fact that the person's comment was uncalled for, I decided to bring this to light. There are people out there that think Independent/self-published authors should not use pen names because pen names are for the professional writers. Well I beg to differ. A pseudonym is used by some authors who want to conceal their identity. My pseudonym is Cecile Garcia, not much difference from my real name, Cecilia. Cecile is the name of one of my favorite characters in a soap opera I used to watch back in the 1980's. It was called Another World.

The character's name was Cecile DePoulignac played by Nancy Frangione. I'm sure if you're as old as I am, you'll remember her. I liked her name and since it was similar to my actual name, I chose to use it. Some authors however really go way out on pen names.

Example:
E.L. James (real name is Erika Leonard Mitchell)
JK Rowling ( real name is Joanne Rowling)
Mark Twain ( real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens)

I'm sure there are many more out there. There's nothing wrong with using a pseudonym, by all means do so if you wish.I am happy that I chose mine.

Why indie Authors Should Still Publish Paperback Books

(This is for Indie/self-published authors)
Recently I was searching online through GoodReads. I wanted to find out where my books are being sold. I found that the books I published as paperbacks are available in these Book stores:
5225 Canyon Crest Dr Ste 30A-B
Riverside, CA 92507

Some of the books are in stock at these book stores and some aren't. You would have to request copy/copies. Probably call them in.

eBooks are exclusive to Amazon Kindle but there are some online book stores that sell eBooks but overall, Kindle is the only place to download eBooks. If you don't have a paperback version of your eBook, you'd likely not find your book in some local book stores and that is why it's important to make a paperback version of your book even if it's just a novelette.

ATTN: in the coming months I am planning of getting my own domain name so, there might be some changes to the website. I'll keep everyone informed.

Older Books of Chandra's Quest

It's been 18 years since I first published Chandra's Quest and I still see some of the older unabridged version of the book in various online book stores. I am sure there are some local book stores that have them, only because I distributed some copies when I first published it. The original copy of Chandra's Quest appears on the list of books that I have up on my Author's page on Amazon and I really don't know how to remove it since I wasn't the one who posted it up on Amazon years ago. I feel that the 2002 version of the book will be on the list for many more years to come because the third party seller connected the book to the recent version of Chandra's Quest. When you scroll through my Author's page on Amazon, you'll see it. It's one of the last books on my list. I highly recommend that if you order Chandra's Quest-- order the recently revised copy. Below is the 2002 version's book cover image. Some third party sellers have a copy of this version.

A few years back, someone emailed me to tell me that when they ordered the book by the seller that is selling it, they did not get the book they ordered. It was an entirely different book, not written by me.
Of course, I explained to them that I am not responsible for what another third party seller sells.
My suggestion to buyers is to ask the seller first if that is the exact book they are selling to avoid spending money on something they didn't order.
If you want to purchase Chandra's Quest, please just purchase it through eBay, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the other bookstores I suggested in a previous blog post.

Where to Find my Books

2013

For those who have the 2013 revised version of Chandra's Quest, may I suggest you purchase or download the current book that has 154 pages. In 2016, I added four more chapters to the book, you may like to read it

Last but not Least:

I am currently selling a limited edition of Chandra's Quest with this book cover image (see below)

This book was published through CreateSpace before CreateSpace and Kindle merged back in 2017. This copy is a rare find because there are no other books with this image in distribution.
Note: It does come with a typo or two. Current books don't have them. This book is signed by author. Please visit link to view where I'm selling the book.

History of: In the Company of Elves

The history of my book, In the Company of Elves. Where do I start. Well, I guess I'll start at the beginning when the story was just written in a spiral notebook. At first it was just notes, later in 2003 I started putting the story together into a word document. I was inspired by fantasy books such as, Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, the Shanara Chronicles and other fantasy books I've read throughout my life.

I do want to mention that Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz also played a part in my inspiration. Originally, when I was working on the story, I was uncertain about the title. I didn't know what to call it. I played with various titles. Agartha, Melissa's Journey, The Elves of Agartha and In the Company of Elves. I chose the the last one on the  list.
At first, I decided to make this book as a novelette, however in 2011 I changed my mind and during the time I was re-writing it, I added a few more chapters.
The original copy was 120 pages. Revised version is close to 200 pages.

2009

2018
(the eBook was published in 2017)

Despite of going through writers block back in 2006 through early 2008, I was able to overcome it, but writer's block did set me back a bit. I finally completed re-writing In the Company of Elves and published it in 2018.

What I would want to see:
Since, In the Company of Elves is a juvenile/young adult book, I would love to see this in my local bookstores or anywhere Indie books are sold.

Throw Back Thursday: In the Company of Elves

Here is my TBT for In the Company of Elves. I am posting two reviews that I recieved long ago for the original copy of  In the Company of Elves. The book was 120 pages long, and was a 4 by 8 inch in size.

Only a selected few ever read my book. I had it up for sale on Amazon when I first published it through InstantPublishers.com. I was a third party seller on Amazon so i did sell my books there. I stopped selling being a third party seller on Amazon, about two years after I published In the Company of Elves.

This review was posted on Amazon for the 1st edition of In the Company of Elves:

"I'm not much of a reader (my daughter is) but have to say i did read this one & I liked it I even finished it. Liked the romance part myself.. (Christina White)

The review below was emailed to me by a member of a group of teachers who live in Placentia, California. They have a book club and review books of authors of all genre.

"My name is Jeanette, and my girl friends and I just read your book. We belong to a book club here in Anaheim. WE enjoyed reading your book. It reminded us a little of "Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Rings & Wizard of OZ. Also, we felt the age appropriate level should be teenagers through adult. Remember the members of the book club are teachers. Again, we enjoyed reading your book and wish you luck in your endeavors. Keep writing you have a nice quality to your work. (Jeanette)

Yes, these are official reviews by real people and no I do not personally know them, just to be clear for those who question the authenticity.

Well, I am happy to share this with my readers and if you have read any of my books, please do Rate and Review. Reviews help an author grow and learn. it gives them confidence and makes them a better writer.Visit my website for more info.

How Long Does a Copyright Last?

I was asked this question several times. It’s not that hard to search for info on the subject but when your written work is questioned in whether you have copyright papers or not, I need to emphasize that everything you write and publish needs to be copyrighted. I’m not talking about fanfic, or blog entries, only books you plan on publishing. A few years ago, CreateSpace wanted proof that in the company of elves was my written work, and that I did not steal from that other author, Sandie Bergen. Really? I do not know that author, I only know that she used the title, In the Company of Elves for one of her books and it was in recent years that she wrote and published her book. February 1, 2016. Her book is a part of a trilogy, whereas my book, is a single novel. By the way, the author died in 2015. Just noting.

As for my book, I originally published it in 2009, then revised it and published it as paperback in 2018 but published it as eBook in 2017.

2009

2017

I came up with the title back in 2004, and started writing the book so yes, I have copyright papers for it. I had to prove my book was mine and by showing CreateSpace the copyright paper for the book, all was cleared.

After I researched the length a copyright for written work last, well I was amazed! This is what I came up with:

*The duration of copyright in these works is generally computed the same way as for works created on or after January 1, 1978: A copyright lifespan is 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first.

What happens to the copyright when an Author dies?
In modern US copyright law, for works made by individuals (not works made by corporations), works are protected for the author's entire life plus 70 years. In the U.S. and Europe, copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. When an author dies, the ownership of the copyright changes. So, ownership in a copyright can be passed to an heir or to a third party via a will.

And that is why I say get a will and last testament set up.

I want to tell you that when you copyright your work, it will cost you. Digital copyright registration will run you $55 each written work. They will send you the paperwork through regular mail. However, if you're filing for one creative work and you're the only copyright holder, it only costs$35. Paper filings have $85 copyright fees.

I suggest spending the $85. You download and print the paperwork, fill it out, sign your name on it and send it to the Copyright office. I know, $85 can be quite a bit for some people but in the long run it’s worth it.

Side note: Copyright your written work. I want to add that titles can’t be copyrighted. Copyrights cover works fixed in a tangible format, but because titles are typically short, they don't fall under copyright protection. So no, you can't copyright a title to a book, song or movie.

That is why when you search for a specific title on Amazon or other online bookstores, you might find various similar titles, but the content is not the same as what you’re looking for. I was searching for, Stranger Things, just to see how many books were out there with a similar title and wouldn’t you know it, I found many. So instead I decided to call my book, The Stranger Things: Paranormal, Supernatural and Unusual phenomenon, instead of Stranger Things: Paranormal, Supernatural and Unusual Phenomenon.

You can find this book on Amazon, just the eBook version.
