Excerpt: Chandra's Quest Bk. 2: Ch. 6 Makea

This excerpt is from chapter 6: Makea.

( After her escape from Mison, Chandra stowed away on a ship heading to the city Aurora. She is unaware that her destination has taken her to another brothel. Starsha (the madam) offers her refuge, however a new bounty hunter has emerged and is bent on apprehending her.)

Chandra awoke with a start. She raised herself up on one elbow, held her breath and listened. With weary eyes she looks at the time that is reflected on the wall above the door. 

"4:10 am." She groans. “The holographic image doesn't lie,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Damn!” She scoffed.“I must have been dreaming. I thought I heard screams.” She lets out a heavy sigh and her head flopped back down onto the pillow. She exhales, closes her eyes and tries to fall back to sleep. 

Suddenly her ears detect the sound of weapons being fired and people running down the hall. She sits up and catches her breath.

“What the Hell is going on?” She said to herself. 

“Oh no! What if Xenos has found me and is killing all those people just to get to me!” She thought and quickly jumps up. She goes into the bathroom, washes her face. She puts on the same clothes that she's  been wearing for the past couple of days. 

“What’s happening out there?” She said to herself. She rubs the sleep out of her eyes and she made her way to the door, placing her ear against it. She can hear weapons firing and people screaming. She gulps.

 “They must know what’s going on." She ponders.

   "Should I go out there?”  She exhales and quickly gathers her belongings. Chandra swings her backpack over her shoulder, opens the door and peeks out. She vigilantly makes her way down the hall and into the elevator.

    She descends to the main floor and steps out. Makea is still fighting with the guards and the male customers. 

“Oh shit! Who is that?” Her eyes shot open. She stares at the chaos that the woman is in the wayside. She looks on in horror. The bodies are piling. Chandra ponders for a second. “There is always a back door to these places. It might lead to an alley or an indoor garden or someplace I can hide till it’s all over.” She ran the opposite direction toward the back, however Makea

caught a glimpse of her. 

“Who is that?” Makea thought. Her eyes narrowed, she realized that is Chandra running off. Makea falls in pursuit. “Got you little witch.” Makea made her way down the hall pushing people aside. Chandra came to the end of the hall. One door led outside to the back alley and the other into Starsha’s office. She pounded on the door. 

 “What are you doing here?” Starsha asked. Chandra pushed her way in. 

   “Please lock the door, now!” Starsha’s discomposed expression changed to fear as she heard the screams coming from all around the brothel. Canchor had told Starsha what was happening, but she did not realize the extent of the damage. She bolted the door after Chandra rushed in. 

  

     “A strange Camigaen woman came out of nowhere and started shooting up the place!” Chandra exclaimed, breathing rapidly. Her heart pounding out of her chest. “She’s wearing armor.

“I am aware of the situation and Canchor called the authorities. We just have to wait.” Starsha started.

“No, it will do you no good!" Chandra insisted. "I think she’s a bounty hunter!” Both their hearts sank as Makea’s footsteps approached. She pounded on the door. “Open this door Harlot and hand over that human!” Starsha looked at Chandra, both wide eyed and anxious. Fear spearing through Starsha’s heart. She caught her breath. “This is not good Chandra,” Starsha exhaled nervously. “However, this room

comes equipped with a hidden room.” Starsha moved

the crystal globe on her desk and a door opened on the other side of the room. They both rushed in, the door closed behind them.

“I don’t think this will keep her out for long.” Chandra said.

“I know but if it comes to it, I have Zytha dust."  Starsha pulled out a small pouch from a corner desk. "If I blow it into her face, she will become disorientated, dazed for a minute or two, just long enough time for both of us to escape.”

“That’s all? What about you?” Chandra whispered. "She'll kill you for helping me."

“She’s going after her bounty. She will not waste time with me,” Starsha paused. “What did you do to cause such attention to yourself my dear?” 

“I…don’t know.” Chandra lied. She gulped. Starsha shook her head, in disbelief.

   “Well...whatever it is, I will help you escape. You only have one opportunity, and this is it.” Starsha said. “If you manage to give her the slip…don’t come back.” Chandra gave her a nod.  

 “I understand. Yes, let’s give it a shot.” Makea fired her weapon at the panel and the door opened. She looked around and sniffed. She walked all along the edge of the room and touched the wall, bit by bit—she stops and snarls.

  “I know where you are. There is no door that I can’t break into! I’ll force my way in!” Makea waited a few seconds. “Fine!” She dug into her pouch and took out an electromagnetic mini bomb and stuck it on the door, setting the timer. Makea ran out of the room. The blast knocked the door open. Starsha and Chandra were hiding behind the desk but were tossed back against the wall; neither were hurt. They stood up, dazed. One of Starsha’s guards ran in but Makea killed him. 

“We don’t have much time before the authorities arrive…hand her over, bitch!” Both Starsha and Chandra stood there paralyzed with fear, sharing an ominous damning scenario. Starsha regain her composure. She scoffed and gave Makea a fictitious smile. “Now, now...why did you have to wreak my brothel? All you had to do is come in and ask for her.” Starsha said, trying to hide her fear. Makea’s cold green eyes stared at her, then flashed at Chandra. 

“Look, I will go with you, just don’t hurt her.” Chandra said, holding her hands up in protest. Chandra is petrified but angry because of the drama

Makea has created and the unwanted attention that she brought to her. Makea slipped her hand into her pouch, taking out the energy cuffs. Suddenly, Starsha poured the Zytha dust onto her hand and blew the dust into Makea’s face. The dust seeped into her nostrils, leaving her disoriented.

“Argh! You bitch!” Makea cried out as she rubbed her eyes and stumbled. 

“Now girl, run!” Starsha shouted, as she took Chandra’s hand, and both headed out the door. Starsha ran toward the door that leads to the alley and Chandra frantically ran toward the front of the brothel. She jumps over dead and injured bodies and almost makes it to the front door, ignoring the squadron of guards that had just arrived. They are about to infiltrate the building. Chandra stopped for a second to look around. Her mouth dropped in disbelief. 

 “What a horrific sight.” She said out loud. A look of dismay shadowed her face. Suddenly something wrapped around her body, a net. The net contains spiny hooks similar to the ones on the suction cups of a squid’s tentacles.

   “What the fuck!” Chandra shouted. 

  “It feels like a thousand needles digging into my skin." She screamed. The net restricted her movement. Chandra pulled on the net, trying to free herself but to no avail. 

The more she moved, the more the tips of the net dug into her flesh. She had no choice but to lay still. Makea loomed over her with a smug look on her face.

“Caught you and now I will take you back to my time. You will stand trial for killing thousands of my people!” Every part of Chandra’s body is paralyzed, except her eyes. Makea dragged Chandra out of the brothel, ignoring the city guards as they approached her with weapons.

   “Let the woman go!” One of the guards shouted. Makea threw a flash bomb at them. The goggles she wears prevent the effects of the flash from affecting her. Chandra had her eyes closed the whole time, she knew what was coming. She did not want to look at the horror that was about to happen. Makea fired at them, injuring and killing some of them in the process. A rental was parked out front and Makea tossed Chandra in the backseat and drove off. More guards fall in pursuit but Makea threw another flash bomb out of the window, temporarily blinding them. Makea and Chandra sped away.
