Why Indie Authors Need to Edit Their Books Thoroughly

Most Indie/self-published authors do not have an editor unless they hire one to do it for them and it’s not cheap, hiring an editor even a freelance one, cost money; most self-published authors struggle to make ends meet and probably have more than one job so it’s out of the question to hire an editor. Most Indie/self-published authors edit their work. I edit my work several times to make sure everything is in place the way I want it. If for some reason I make a mistake and there’s a typo or repeated sentence or paragraph, I correct it, usually during the editing process. I inspect my book thoroughly and then when I think it’s ready, I publish it as an eBook then a paperback, however my new book Lost in the Backrooms: The Phoenix Files vol 1, I will be publishing both at the same time since someone wants an order of 10 copies from me, he/she does a giveaway on their website of Indie Books, and it’s a good way to get my writing out there too.

Anyways, Let’s talk about Jabberwocky Book 2: The Tainted Wonderland series. I am currently reading the book, and I found a mistake within the book. The author failed to thoroughly edit her work before publishing. Pages 59-64 are repeated. Yes, it happens but this is a BIG mess up. I remember in my first book, Chandra’s Quest Book 1, I accidentally repeated three sentences, however I corrected it, but it was after I received criticism from 'certain' people who had read my book back in the 2000’s when it was first published and critically noted it publicly. Of course, the first copy of Chandra’s Quest was published by Instant Publisher, not KDP but that doesn’t matter because it’s up to the author to edit their books before publishing with a subsidiary company.

Anyways that small mistake cost me the respect of those certain people, who never bought another book from me, assuming that self-published books are not worth the effort. People like that are the ones that constantly give all Indie authors low rates because that’s what they do.

Well, if they read Jabberwocky, and saw the mistake in that book, then the mistake I had made in the early days would’ve seemed like nothing, sorry.

To be fair though, Jabberwocky is good, it is well written in all respects, the only problem is the part I mentioned in the book. It does stand out. I read the author’s first book in the series, Ask Alice, and I liked it, and gave it a good rate/review.

In conclusion, self-published authors need to edit their work thoroughly before publishing their books because if you’re an Indie/self-published author, people tend to be more critical of your written work, trust me I know.

Yet those very people read & praised Fifty Shades of Grey. It's no different than fanfiction, in fact it was based on a fanfic from Twilight. Just saying.
